Military, civilian mapping departments to be integrated

China: During the 12th Five-Year Plan period the State Bureau of Surveying and Mapping (SBSM) and the Surveying and Mapping Bureau of the General Staff Headquarters (SMBGSH) of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) will adopt the measures of establishing a coordination mechanism, defpro.com reported. The mechanism will facilitate the military and civilian integrated development. It will improve the regulations and standards and push forward achievement sharing, and exchange as well as scientific and technological innovation cooperation, to gradually establish a win-win mapping system.

The report observed that meanwhile, it is important to make great efforts in developing major mapping projects including the geographic information infrastructure and the national space benchmark. It is essential to improve the comprehensive support capabilities and promote economic and social development by fully bringing out the military and civilian mapping advantages.

During the 12th Five-Year Plan period, the military and civilian mapping departments will carry out joint trainings and exercises on emergency support mainly intended to strengthen the collaborative cooperation on disaster-relief and other major operations and improve the emergency rapid mapping support capabilities. Moreover, the SBSM and SMBGSH will establish consultation mechanism and strengthen the top-level design and strategic planning to promote the military and civilian integrated mapping development which is expected to play an integral role in maintaining national security, expanding national interests and serving the economic construction.
