Memorandum of Understanding between ICIMOD and ITC

The International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) and the International Institute for Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation (ITC), the Netherlands have signed a Memorandum of Understanding concerning Cooperation in Education and Training, Research and Advisory Services.

This MoU was signed on 28th November 2002 at the 23rd Asian Conference on Remote Sensing in Kathmandu. This agreement is seen as an enabling vehicle for activities jointly embarked upon by the respective organizations. The intent of the agreement is to provide a mechanism for both ICIMOD and ITC to work more easily together in mutually progressive and supportive activities. The agreement shall permit the head of each of the two organisations to enter into subsequent agreements with each other to allow collaborative joint efforts that are mutually beneficial to both organisations.

The areas of common interest includes: Capacity building and institutional strengthening in the field of geo-information, earth observation and its application to sustainable mountain development; Development of an Integrated Spatial Data Infrastructure at local, national and regional level in the Hindu Kush-Himalayan region; and Development of a Mountain GIS Portal for dissemination of GIS and RS knowledge and free access to spatial data.

The MoU was signed by Prof.dr.ir. Martien Molenaar, Rector of ITC and Dr. J. Gabriel Campbell, Director General of ICIMOD. Basanta Shrestha, Acting Division Head MENRIS of ICIMOD and Paul Schoonackers, Senior Project Officer in the Bureau for Project Services from ITC are the contact person from respective organizations.
