22 August 2006, Chennai, India – Can you identify people’s occupations by looking at where they live on a map? Or, which type of masonry would be economical for building houses at a certain place? School students in 106 teams put their heads together to crack questions by interpreting the symbols given in the topographical map at the Survey of India-National Cartographic Association’s State-level map quiz on Tuesday.

The hall at SBOA School at Anna Nagar in the city of Chennai was filled with excitement, as students answered questions ranging from basic geography to cartographic concepts. Most participants said they found the crossword puzzle and reading maps interesting.
