USA, 30 May 2006: MapAction deployed a team of six volunteers to Suriname, South America to provide situational mapping to the United Nations and the Government.
MapAction volunteers arrived in the capital, Paramaribo, on the afternoon May 13 and quickly set up a mapping cell alongside the UN Disaster Assessment Centre, located in and supporting the Suriname National Disaster Centre. Over the next week MapAction provided the NCCR and Aid Agencies supporting the relief effort with maps, showing the situation as it developed.
After a week the disaster response effort settled down into a series of carefully planned operations using the newly arrived aircraft from Brazil and the Netherlands. MapAction left on Saturday 20th May after a week which presented many challenges and where our efforts have contributed to helping the disaster’s victims, and their helpers.
