Karnataka to opt for centralised GIS system, yet again?

Bengaluru, India: The governor of Karnataka state Vajubhai R. Vala mad an announcement that Karnataka government will establish a centralised geographic information system (GIS) project for centralised planning purposes of various government departments. The Hindu quoted this in a news release.

Karnataka already has a state wide Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI) in place under the name of Karnataka Geoportal. Further Karnataka State Council for Science & Technology (KSCST) has developed district-level GIS databases to support the process of local level planning at district, taluk and village levels in Karnataka.

From this news, it is thus unclear that how the existing SDI will be integrated with the proposed project.
