Leica Geosystems GIS & Mapping, LLC announced that support for JPEG2000 data is now available within its ERDAS IMAGINE V8.6 image processing and photogrammetry product lines. The end result of this collaborative effort between Leica Geosystems and Mapping Science, Inc. (Seattle, Washington, USA) is an integrated solution that allows customers to quickly and easily read geospatially-registered image data in the JPEG2000 format. The new support solution also adds to ERDAS IMAGINE support for the GeoJP2 format developed by Mapping Science, as well as other compliant JPEG2000 data. GeoJP2 is the first imagery compression and metadata management solution developed specifically for the GIS community. GeoJP2 eliminates dependence on proprietary file formats while introducing features and functionality never before available to geospatial professionals. “With the JPEG2000 standard, as well as with GeoJP2, image analysis professionals have more choices when storing and disseminating a wide array of imagery,” said Brad Skelton, Vice President, Software Engineering, Leica Geosystems GIS & Mapping.
