Jordan: The Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority (ASEZA) in cooperation with United Nations Development Program (UNDP) is implementing a project titled “Mainstreaming Marine Biodiversity Conservation into Coastal Zone Management in the Aqaba Special Economic Zone”. The main goal of this project is to internalise biodiversity as an asset and value for economic development and promoting more effective and integrated management of the coastal zone in Aqaba.
For this purpose a geospatially relevant database will be prepared. The database will help in spatial planning for the improved management of Aqaba’s coastal resources and encourage the equitable sharing of benefits from these resources between the local population and the tourist industry.
A GIS-based coastal and marine database will be developed which will ensure the development of a marine spatial plan to complement the existing Land Use Plan, and provide long-term support for biodiversity-based ICZM.
