US: Jerry Johnston, Director, Information and Technology Management Division, Office of the Chief Information Officer, US Department of Interior, was presented with the GeoBuiz Leadership Award for Policy Innovation at the GeoBuiz Summit 2016. The award was presented by Mr Kevin Gallagher, Associate Director, Core Science Systems, US Geological Survey at GeoBuiz Summit 2016.

Geospatial Media and Communications established the GeoBuiz Leadership Awards to recognize and acknowledge geospatial leaders in the United States who have gone an extra mile and paved the way for our industry to follow.

This year’s awards committee comprised of three eminent and widely recognized professionals from the geospatial community – Mark Reichardt, CEO, Open Geospatial Consortium; Ivan DeLoatch, Executive Director, FGDC; and Chris Tucker, Founder, MapStory Foundation.

The committee recognized Jerry’s phenomenal leadership in US Geospatial Platform Initiative, especially in the areas of shared services, service availability assessments, new partnerships, and platform transformation that are making the geospatial services more practical and usable. The committee feels that the geospatial platform’s innovative policy initiative enabling commoditization of geospatial infrastructure and capabilities empowering citizens and businesses, ultimately enhance value and social relevance of geospatial information in our society and economy.

“In a world filled with escalating challenges, our governments and communities need geospatial data for reasons including supporting economic development, combating the effects of climate change, and protecting our natural resources.  I am grateful to Geospatial Media for their efforts to bring our community together as a part of our shared efforts to make this information available and actionable, and for this recognition, which I am happy to accept on behalf of the members of the Federal Geographic Data Committee,” said Johnston.
