Japan Government prepares Gazetteer

Japan: Geospatial Information Authority and the Hydrographic, and Oceanographic Department of the Japan Coast Guard, Government of Japan, have prepared The Gazetteer of Japan. It is based on the resolution of the United Nations Conference on the Standardisation of Geographical Names.

The Gazetteer is a comprehensive compilation of standardised geographical names of features in Japan including administrative and residential areas, natural features and topographic features of ocean floor.

Gazetteer of Japan records approximately 3,900 geographical names which include the geographic coordinates (latitude, longitude), spellings, etc.
