Japan: The US State Department has approved the sale of three unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) worth $1.2 billion to Japan. These drones are called Global Hawks and are manufactured by Northrop Grumman. The drones’ Integrated Sensor Suite (ISS) consists of a synthetic aperture radar (SAR), electro-optical (EO), and thermographic camera (IR) sensors. An onboard inertial navigation system, supplemented by Global Positioning System updates, comprises the navigational suite.
According to a post on the website of the Defense Security Cooperation Agency, the drones “will significantly enhance Japan’s intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities and help ensure that Japan is able to continue to monitor and deter regional threats”.
