ITRI debuts Open GeoSMS for cross-platform LBS

Taiwan: The Information and Communications Research Laboratories (ICL) under the Taiwan government-sponsored Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) unveiled its Open GeoSMS, an open-coordinate short message service (SMS) standard to allow transmission of map information and communications among different platforms of digital maps.

“While most smartphone models support GPS, geographic information are unable to be transmitted because of the difference in operating system and LBS (location-based service) software programme,” ICL said. “Open GeoSMS is a platform to solve the problem, enabling users of one handset platform to receive map information and LBS from other platforms.”

To promote Open GeoSMS to the global market, ICL has won support from Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC), which has set up an Open GeoSMS specification working group with the first meeting scheduled for June 2010, ICL said.
