India: The Indian Bureau of Mines will sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with ISRO to stop illegal mining across different states. The Indian government is planning to use remote sensing satellite data to curb illegal mining operations. Legal boundaries of mined areas can be tracked with the help of satellite images taken on regular basis. The Ministry of Mines will start discussions with ISRO in October 2015. Earth observation satellites are already being used to estimate the kind of minerals and the extent of deposits present in an area.
