Iran has recently said it would launch its first satellite into space by May 2005. Mohammad Fathi, head of Iran’s Scientific and Industrial Research Center, has said the Mesbah (lantern) satellite was domestically produced and would be used for weather forecasting and locating natural resources. The Mesbah satellite will pave the ground for Iran to build other satellites in the future. It would be cube-shaped, weigh 134 pounds and would be placed into orbit at an altitude of around 560 miles.
