Indonesia: Bakosurtanal, Indonesia’s coordinating agency for survey and mapping, signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with the Ministry of Housing of the country. The agency also signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Ministry of Environment of the country.
The signing of the MOU was done during the launch of the National EcoRegion, an initiative which is designed to make development and space allocation plans compatible with environmental considerations. EcoRegion is defined as geographic areas that have similar climatic characteristics, soil, water, native flora and fauna, as well as patterns of human interaction with nature that describe the integrity of natural systems and the environment.
The establishment of National Ecoregion serves as a basis for setting EcoRegions in order to identify potential problems and areas that need to be considered in the preparation of the Plan of Protection and Environmental Management
On the other hand, the MOA aims to heighten cooperation between the two agencies on the use of geospatial information for the development of public housing in the country.
According to a press statement from Bakosurtanal, the Ministry of Housing will use geospatial information for the construction of housing and settlement areas, and as well as to increase the effectiveness and efficiency in housing programmes and residential neighbourhood.
Minister of Public Housing, Suharso Monoarfa said that geospatial information is critical in meeting the development of housing programmes and that the joint partnership between the two agencies would have a significant contribution to the development of public housing and neighbourhood in the country.
In addition to Bakosurtanal, the Ministry of Housing is also coordinating partnerships with a number of relevant agencies including the Ministry of Rural Development, Central Bureau of Statistics and the Association of Regional Development Banks.
