Indian state to develop GIS app to prevent illegal constructions

India: To face the challenge of large scale encroachments and illegal constructions in urban India, the state government of Maharashtra wants to launch an application based on satellite images in its three biggest cities — Nagpur, Mumbai and Pune. The National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC) will help develop the app.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis says, "The NRSC will take satellite images of the city on cluster basis and compare it with the satellite image taken in a similar manner after 2-3 months. It will give a clear picture of developments in those particular clusters. Respective civic bodies will verify whether developments and constructions done are legal or illegal. Action will be taken immediately based on reports."
