Mumbai: Civic officials in Thane are mapping illegal buildings in the city with the help of GPS devices. They are using Trimble Juno SB to scan the interior and external contours of a structure. The pocket-sized instrument was purchased by the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC).
"This device has been instrumental in mapping illegal structures so far in Thane. It is easy to carry and simple to operate, and has revolutionised the way our machinery operates in the face of this challenge," said a senior civic official.
The corporation has so far scanned and mapped 160 structures with the help from this device. Once the scanning is completed by the device, the data is uploaded onto a central server, which could be accessed by anyone at the ward level.
"Soon, we will upload this data on our kiosks and even common citizens would be able to walk in and have a look at the legality or illegality of their building," said an official.
