India using precision surveying to solve border disputes

India: Precision surveying equipment is increasingly being used to determine long-disputed boundaries across the globe and has now been turned to settle an ancient contentious border in India, surveyequipment.com reports.

The border between the states of Gujarat and Rajasthan in India has been surveyed by government officials, to officially determine where the taxes of the people living in the border area should be paid. B V Bilwal, district land inspector, Sabarkantha, Gujarat, said the methods and equipment they were using to establish the definitive border – including GPS – had never been used before in India for such purposes.

“Now the district collectors of Udaipur in Rajasthan and Sabarkantha in Gujarat will meet in Himmatnagar on Monday next to discuss the land dispute,” Bilwal added. The meeting will determine exactly how much land is under dispute and which state will benefit from its determination.
