India: The State Government of Maharashtra recently announced that it will be using facial recognition and GIS technologies to clean up its electoral register ahead of its poll in five months time. The project is expect to commence in June.

Facial recognition algorithm and GIS will help reduce duplication of voters, as well as minimise errors in particulars such as names and postal addresses. Facial recognition algorithms identify facial features by extracting features from an image of the face. These features are then used to search for other images with matching features.

This is the first time an Indian state government is using such technology to conduct data cleansing on electoral data.
