India: To accelerate the study of concentrated black carbon in the atmosphere and its impact on climate, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has launched a network of 16 Aethalometers, 12 Sky radiometers and 12 Nephelometers. Called System of Aerosol Monitoring and Research (SAMAR), the network will characterize aerosol radiative properties and climate impacts. The system was inaugurated by India’s Minister of Science & Technology and Earth Sciences, Dr. Harsh Vardhan, at the 141st Foundation Day of IMD on January 15. The minister also launched a new user-friendly website of the country's central weather forecaster on the occasion.
