India city to map out traffic accidents with GIS to improve road safety

India: The Center for infrastructure, Sustainable Transportation and Urban Planning (CiSTUP) of Indian Institute of Science (IISc) is mapping out accidents in Bangalore with an aim to identify and rectify accident-prone areas. The collected data, including number of accidents and fatalities on each road, will be uploaded onto a map. Data will also be published openly online so that citizens and businesses can easily access it.

GIS helps the government quickly visualise and identify high accident rate areas or ‘black spots’. Insights can be passed on to the right authorities to act upon, whether it is a traffic light that is not working well, an overflowing drain, or a road hump that is causing the accident.
