IIIT-Allahabad suggests use of GIS tools for urban renewal mission

Allahabad, India, 18 July 2006: The Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), Allahabad, has suggested Allahabad Nagar Nigam to utilize GIS in the various programmes under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM).

In reply to the letter of District Magistrate/Administrator, the Director, Dr M D Tiwari, stated, “If spatial database is created to store the required information in computers, the Geographical Information System (GIS) software tools may be effectively used to manage and monitor the information and may also help in various analysis and decision making tasks”.

Many cities are striving for e-Governance through GIS that will increase transparency and accountability and reduce complacency in the system. GIS has the potential to link data visually on the common denominator, analyse it and make predictions for the future, he said. He has suggested that new ways of visualising the results of modelling and intelligent spatial data analysis techniques are needed to help decision-making and resource management.
