IBGE standardises geographic names

Brazil: The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (in Portuguese IBGE) released the Bank of Geographical Names of Brazil (in Spanish BNGB). One can access it at https://www.bngb.ibge.gov.br. It is a pioneer database in the country, with information on more than 50,000 geographic names, such as standardised spelling, boundaries, coordinates, and historical, geographic and cartographic data.

The goal is to increase knowledge of the geographic names and standardise the spellings so that they become official in the future. For now, historical locations of the BNGB are only available for municipalities in the states of Rio de Janeiro and Paraná. By early 2012, the Bank will be in charge of mapping the geographical names of the states of Sao Paulo, Minas Gerais, and Goias.

This Bank is a part of the Brazil’s Geographic Names Project, implemented by the Department of Cartography (in Spanish CCAR) of the Geosciences Board (in Spanish DGC) of IBGE in February 2005.
