GPS units become life savers

A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter was needed to rescue four fishermen recently who became stranded on the Bay of Green Bay. Ice shoves created open water, stranding them a half-mile off Chaudoir’s Bay in Door County’s Union township. Rescuers say the men had both a cell phone to call for help and a GPS unit, which helped lead rescuers to them. A decade ago, GPS was a luxury. When the wind blows on the big lake, just keeping track of your bait can be difficult much less your sense of direction.

It’s an investment no fishermen should go without. It’s an important piece of equipment, safety equipment. It’s also less expensive than most gear that won’t get you out of jam when you least expect it.
