GPS, satellite imageries enhance census operations in Nigeria

24 March 2006: Nigeria began taking its first population census in 15 years on March 21.
Innovations such as use of GPS and Satellite imageries to carve out geo-referenced Enumeration Area maps, the use of machine readable forms to guarantee against alteration or additions to information obtained from the field, and the Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS), which is used to read fingerprints and thereby detect multiple counting, were reeled out. The GIS would be used to store the results of the 2006 Census, which will be monitored by several local and international monitors and observers.
