GPS market to touch USD1 billion by 2013

Australia:GIS market could consume over USD 1 billion in GPS devices annually by 2013, according to a report, The global market for GPS/GNSS devices in GIS Mapping 2009-2013. It has been prepared by Position One Consulting.

Although the global financial crisis has impacted revenues in the short term, the world-wide market for GPS and Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) devices for use in GIS Mapping is experiencing significant change and the most optimistic forecasts suggest revenues could exceed USD 1 billion by 2013.

On the supply side professional GPS/GNSS players like Trimble and Topcon continue to integrate and innovate products with increased accuracy, improved availability and superior ergonomics. In addition new consumer and business devices such as Ricoh’s GPS enabled digital camera and Blackberry’s 8800 series Smartphone with GPS are being evaluated and adopted by GIS users looking for low cost effective mapping tools.

On the demand side developing economies like China and India are investing in GIS which is a catalyst for GPS sales in those countries. Developed economies like US are adopting Mobile GIS which will progressively put GPS/GNSS enabled devices into the hands of millions of field workers.
