India: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed a preliminary enquiry (PE) against Google for alleged breach by mapping defence installations and sensitive areas.
Reportedly, Google had conducted an event 'Mapathon' in February-March 2013 without seeking prior permission from India's official mapping agency, Survey of India (SoI).
As part of the Mapathon, the Internet giant had asked citizens to map their neighbourhoods, particularly details related to restaurants and hospitals. Later SoI directed Google to share collected details and found several coordinates bearing details of sensitive defence installations, which were not actually in the public domain.
CBI registered the PE on the basis of a complaint filed by Surveyor General of India's office to the Union Home Ministry.
