UK: Google Map Maker has been launched in the UK. The tool will enable British users to become ‘citizen cartographers’. The feature, which has been available in some countries since 2008, offers Brits the chance to upload detailed information about their local areas onto Google Maps, thus enhancing the user experience for others.
In collaboration with the folks at Google, Bletchley Park – the famous ‘home of the code-breakers’ – played host to a ‘MapUp’ workshop during which attendees were given the opportunity to find out just what Map Maker has to offer. Bletchley staff have been using the tool since Easter to create an intricate map of the code-breaking hub-turned tourist attraction. The team has succeeded in transforming the heritage site’s once-sparse Google Map into a wealth of digital information for visitors.
