US: Google Ground Truth has built better maps of places such as Russia and Hong Kong. These maps show the details of walkways, harbours and even ferry routes.
Google’s Ground Truth initiative was launched in Hong Kong and parts of Russia (including Moscow, St. Petersburg, Novosibirsk, Yekaterinburg and large areas in the west of the country). The initiative aimed at adding more details to the maps. The effort seems to have been successful. Google has been able to add walkways to Hong Kong’s famous Victoria Park, as well as harbours and even ferry routes in Hong Kong’s Central and Westerd Districts. They have also updated street names in 50 towns in Russia. The maps also show building labels for the Moscow State University.
