GIS to power school transportation

UAE: A committee from Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC) is considering the use of GIS, developed by ADEC, in order to develop transportation plans in accordance with the best bus routes. This will help minimize carbon emissions, alleviate traffic jams and save student time.
In addition, the committee is also planning to install surveillance cameras in school buses from the 2011-2012 academic year.
The comprehensive study on the new school transportation requirements is currently being carried out by the ADEC in partnership with the Emirates Transport and the schools as part of the overall changes to be implemented in public schools for the 2011-2012 academic year.
ADEC affirmed that student transportation will be significantly developed during the coming years to ensure safer student travelling, using the latest technological solutions deployed by ADEC for elevating the quality of the educational system of Abu Dhabi to the highest international levels.
According to the plan, surveillance cameras will be installed in school buses in order to monitor the safety of students while travelling to and from school. Moreover, parents will receive SMS notifications when students go on board of the bus leaving school. This will help parents of young students follow up the arrival timings of their children.
A comprehensive study was carried out by the committee to identify the impact of school merging plans developed & implemented by ADEC and the number of buses needed for accommodating students at each school.
