Dakshina Kannada district police in the Indian state of Karnataka are set to adopt ‘GIS’ to monitor security arrangements in the local zilla and taluk panchayat elections to be held this week. The digital map of the district available with Natural Resource Development and Management Society (NRDMS) centre was integrated with the information related to police security scheme with the help of Arc view software. Thus information like sensitivity of booths, stationing of striking forces, location of sector mobiles, deployment of police personnel to booths, telephone numbers among others can be found on the map. The map will also help in finding the exact location of booths, striking forces, the distance between the nearest police station and any villages. Introduced on an experimental basis, GIS, if found useful, will be further improvised and used for various other applications in future.
