Delegates from the South African municipality of Buffalo City will be making their way to Westchester on August 2, to get a first-hand glimpse of the county’s GIS program. GIS, a division of the Department of Information Technology, manages the county’s digital maps and data for a host of community purposes, including emergency dispatching, environmental protection, and interactive online mapping.

Like many municipalities throughout the United States, South Africa’s Buffalo City is ramping up efforts to expand its current GIS program to meet constituents’ growing needs. Among other topics, delegates will be discussing the county’s work on affordable on-line services which have made GIS data and interactive maps available to anyone with a computer. This is not the first time Westchester’s GIS program has attracted international attention. Previous delegations scouting Westchester’s use of technology traveled from China, Russia and Italy.
