Australia: Surveying and Spatial Science Institute (SSI) and Esri Australia recently conducted the ‘2013 GIS in Local Government Benchmark Study’ in 150 Australian local and regional councils. About 86% of the respondents said that the technology was ‘essential’ for a sustainable future.

The study was conducted to find out the acceptance and popularity of GIS technology in the local and regional councils. About 99% of the respondents said that GIS technology was ‘important’ to fulfil the goal of sustainable future. “GIS technology enables planners to conduct detailed analysis on how proposed developments may impact existing buildings and structures,” said Len Olyott, Esri Australia GIS specialist.
