Baku, Azerbaijan: Azerbaijani IT-company SiNAM adopted GIS in tourism. The system is empowering the website guide-map.az. It aims to provide users a tool for searching and viewing the location of tourist sites, museums, hospitals and other facilities on an online digital map of the republic, as well as obtain information about the tourism facilities available in the country.
Trend reported that the website, a virtual base, unites operations to work with databases with the advantages of a full-fledged visualisation. The key beneficiary of the project is the Azerbaijani Culture and Tourism Ministry. The tourism sphere is closely linked with space technologies. All tourist facilities will be equipped with GPS, which allows accurate determination of a specific location’s coordinates.
At present, GIS systems are used in the spheres of ecology, military, agriculture, construction, development and mining, etc. Using GIS systems in the tourism sector will increase the country’s tourist attractiveness and individual tourism and excursion routes.
