The GI Forum kicked off in style on 7 July, 2010 at the Main Auditorium of the Centre for Geoinformatics at the University of Salzburg in Austria. The inauguration was combined for the German AGIT and the English GI Forum. Welcoming the delegates, Prof Josef Strobl highlighted the proceedings for the next three days. The guests were regaled to a Jazz duet of saxophone and keyboard before getting down to the serious matter of geoinformatics. The opening keynote was delivered by Athina Trakas, the Director European Operations of OGC. The keynote was presented as a series of questions and answers between Trakas and Strobl, duly interspersed with humorous asides.
Earlier, on 6 July, two workshops were held on Vulnerability Assessment and on SDI. Both these were well attended. The workshops were followed by a keynote talk on “Geointelligence in the insurance industry, risk management of natural hazards” by Andreas Siebert of Munich RE, an insurance company. The talk covered several aspects of the use of geospatial data for assessing risk and damage due to natural calamities.
An AGIT Expo was also inaugurated on 7 July. The next two days will be filled with lectures, poster presentations, the expo and a lot of networking.
