Geospatial tech to protect world heritage sites

Germany: In the annual meeting of the World Heritage Committee in Germany, UNESCO and the UN Institute for Training and Research signed an agreement to protect cultural and natural heritage sites with the latest geospatial technologies. The strategic partnership will use satellite imagery while dealing with areas affected by conflict or natural disasters. Other geospatial technologies that may be harnessed include the use of crowd-sourcing app UN-ASIGN, which was successfully applied following the recent Nepal earthquake. Drones will also be used both for general recording purposes and for detailed damage assessments of buildings and other infrastructure
