GAF AG, a multi-national German remote sensing applications and information systems firm, recently won a contract with the German Federal State of Brandenburg to develop and introduce an agricultural information system for the Integrated Administration and Control System (IACS), in the context of the European Common Agricultural Policy (CAP).
The ambitious and multitask project included the participation of farmers in supporting the setup of a new agricultural reference system. All farmers submitting subsidy declarations within Integrated Agricultural Control System (IACS) received dedicated GIS tools together with encapsulated aerial orthophotos and vector information covering the newly established references system, which will be the future basis for the applications.
In total, more than 6000 CD-ROMS were distributed to the farmers. An extensive training of farmers has had to be coordinated. Farmers belonging to the 16 districts were brought together and trained by GAF AG experts in 20 sessions of 60 to 400 farmers each. The software development, raster data encapsulation, preparation of CDs and training was carried out within a period of 6 weeks.
The IACS-GIS System components of the LaFIS product portfolio are adapted and integrated in order to serve the specific needs of agricultural administrations. Depending on demand, the systems are connected to a geo-data or IACS server and facilitate application support, application processing and control as well as the compilation and maintenance of new Land Parcel Identification Systems (LPIS).
