Russia: The Russian Space Systems (RKS) Corporation has proposed to provide all the disabled people with free navigators, said Yuri Urlichich, the company’s General Director and General Design Engineer. “The Social GLONASS Project involves provision of navigation services, primarily, to the disabled, people who have difficulty moving in the street due to their illness,” Urlichich said.
The RKS Corporation has set up a pilot zone for the Social GLONASS project in Moscow’s Tagansky district to test the techniques and technologies aimed at making life for invalids safer and more comfortable.
The Social GLONASS project is aimed primarily at creating additional safety and better quality of life for socially vulnerable groups: the disabled, pensioners, orphans, and many others.
The Social GLONASS aims to form a barrier-free environment for people with impaired physical mobility, help them feel members of society and become more confident about the future. The project consists of several inter-related parts: creating individual technical devices, fitting various transport and special vehicles with special equipment, and installing proper infrastructure.
Citing an example of an European country where 50,000 people suffer from Alzheimer’s disease, he said, “All of them were supplied with free navigators. And we, a country that has one of the world’s two navigation systems, have not solved this problem yet.”
“In Moscow, 60,000 invalids are compelled to stay permanently indoors. Yes, it could be because of poor health or because of the lack of wheelchair ramps. But someone is simply afraid to get lost, and such examples exist,” Urlichich added.
