First phase of Maldives mapping project completed

The first phase of the Maldives National Mapping and GIS Development Project has been completed, the Planning Ministry said in Maldives. Photos have been taken of islands to be charted under the first phase of the project which is undertaken with free assistance from the Government of India. Indian experts and planes were used for aerial photo shoots.

The purpose of this project is to compile a map of Maldives and to collect vital information that would assist in such areas as the planning of land utilization in different islands, planning the utilization of natural resources, population migration and settlement and planning of transportation development.

The project was started in February and will be completed within the year, the Planning Ministry said.
