The Study Group on Environmental Issues (GESTA) launched on August 12 the website of the Observatory of Environmental Conflicts of Minas Gerais. The portal brings together interactive maps, analytical texts and reports made by residents affected by environmental exploitation projects throughout the state.
The website content is produced and organized by the Observatory of Environmental Conflicts Program: Social Technologies and Environmental Justice, which works to expand the actions undertaken by GESTA in partnership with the Federal University of São João del-Rei (UFSJ) and the State University of Montes Claros (Unimontes).
The launch event will start at 2 PM, in the auditorium of the Rectory, and will be attended by the Provost of Extension of UFMG, Claudia Mayorga, the director of the Faculty of Philosophy and Humanities (Fafich), Fernando Filgueiras, and the coordinator of the Polo Integration program of UFMG in Jequitinhonha Valley, Maria das Dores Pimentel Nogueira.
The presentation of the Observatory project will be done by teachers Andrea Zhouri (GESTA), Eder Carneiro (UFSJ) and Felisa Anaya (Unimontes). Then there will be debate between representatives of various social movements, such as the occupation of the Guarani-Kaiowá Indians and the Committee of People Affected by the Itapebi Dam.
