Muscat: The two-day Oman Geospatial Expo concluded on a positive note. The first of its kind exhibition event on geospatial information and technologies witnessed the participation of close to 800 visitors and delegates from more than 15 countries around the globe and was extremely successful in showcasing how geospatial technologies are helping to enhance the pace of development in the country. The participants included visitors and delegates from various ministries, government organisations, private companies and educational institutes from around the globe.
The exhibition, which included participants from both the public and private sector such as Haya Water, Ministry of Regional Municipalities and Water Resources, Petroleum Development Oman, Royal Oman Police etc, was inaugurated by His Excellency Sultan Bin Salim Al Habsi, Secretary General of Supreme Council of Planning.
Addressing an august gathering of esteemed individuals from Oman, Air Commodore Yaqoob Bin Saud Al-Toobi, Head of National Survey Authority, in his opening remarks explained how geospatial technology, survey sciences and mapping have become a crucial part of Oman’s development curve since the inception of the NSA. However, he said that there was still a long way to go to make sure that the technology realises its true potential.
Mr. Saleem Bin Abdullah Al-Hashmi, Director of Geospatial Information at the National Survey Authority gave a detailed presentation on some of the agency’s latest initiatives. He said that understanding the tremendous utility of these technologies in a lot of diverse applications, from zoning and land use, to environmental management, national census, and emergency response – organisations at all levels in the Sultanate of Oman have made massive investments in acquiring geospatial information, converting it to digital form, and maintaining computer-based systems for accessing and using it.
Oman Geospatial Expo was organised by Geospatial Media and Communications in association with the National Survey Authority. National Centre for Statistics and Information supported the conference as Platinum Sponsors while Omantel were the Gold Sponsors. Rolta and Jal Technologies were the silver sponsors of the event. Sultan Qaboos University participated as the Knowledge Partners.
