The Indian LOK Sabha on Tuesday, December 3rd has unanimously passed the freedom of Information Bill 2000. The legislation entitles every citizen to have access to information controlled by public authorities.
According to the Bill, it is obligatory upon every public authority to provide information and maintain records consistent with its operational needs. These records would have to be duly catalogued, indexes and published at such intervals as may be prescribed by the appropriate government or the competent authority.
Mr Pramod Mahajan has mentioned that that the Bill does not cover information regarding the people who have taken huge loans from banks.
