Europeans develop food-tracking system

A European consortium group has developed technology to trace food from farm to the table. The GeoTraceAgri project is important for Europe, where consumers are more concerned about the origins of food and less likely to go by brand names, researchers said. The project is funded by Information Society Technologies. The project uses the latest satellite imagery and mapping to gather data about agricultural areas with each field being assigned its own number. Ultimately, information would be available on the Internet. The next step is to develop a commercially viable system from the prototype.
