eSpatial Solutions Ltd, the spatial information management company, and the National University of Ireland, Maynooth’s (NUIM) National Centre for Geocomputation (NCG) have entered into a joint venture to establish a centre of excellence in GIS based spatial analysis on the Maynooth campus. eSpatial will provide software site licenses of its flagship geospatial solution, iSMART, to the centre while NCG will provide research resources and facilities.
The focus of the NCG will be to undertake research into the fundamentals of spatial data processing and to promote the use of GIS and Geographical Information Science (GISc) throughout Ireland, to make GIS technologies available to a wide variety of researchers and professionals, and to further the field through basic and applied research. The €2.3 million worth of software donated by eSpatial will provide the necessary development and deployment framework to enable this academic research to be carried out.
The NCG focuses on basic research, technology transfer, software development, graduate education, service to communities and local governments and professional training in GIS and related technologies.
