Finland, September 24, 2014: Eric Sivel was formally chosen as the new chairman of Joint Authorities for Rulemaking on Unmanned Systems (JARUS)– a global group of national aviation authorities developing and proposing regulations for Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS).
The plenary meeting of JARUS was held in Helsinki on 15-19 September 2014. As part of the meeting, it was decided to create a new secretariat to support the group's work. The office of the secretariat will be set up within the Brussels office of the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA).
During the meeting the appointment of Mike Lissone of Eurocontrol as head of the secretariat was also confirmed.
The attendee members also resolved that a flexible approach should be adopted in case of unmanned aerial aircrafts. For instance, it was agreed by all that the simplest RPAS and their operations would not to be regulated at all.
The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) is expected to take a more active role in RPAS regulation and the governance of JARUS.
