EC asks Bulgaria to return agricultural fund

Bulgaria: The European Commission (EC) requested Bulgaria to return EUR 24.54 million of unduly spent European agricultural funds. The Commission said the charge had been prompted by the “insufficient levels of on-the-spot checks, weaknesses in the Land Parcel Identification System-Geographical Information System (LPIS-GIS) and provision of inaccurate information and insufficient guidance to farmers with regard to area aid”.

The Sofia Echo reported that the EC is claiming back a total of EUR 530 million of unduly spent agriculture financing by member states, including Denmark, Greece, Spain, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Romania and the UK. In the meantime, Germany will be reimbursed 500 000 euro, the statement said.
