US: Commercial satellite imagery provider DigitalGlobe along with satellite builder Ball Aerospace, held an Open House for media in California to showcase the WorldView-3 satellite. The higher-resolution imaging satellite is currently undergoing final tests and is expected to complete the phase ahead of its projected August launch date.
The initial launch window is Aug. 13-14 aboard an Atlas 5 rocket at Vandenberg Air Force Base, California. In addition to improved resolution, WorldView-3's advancements include a shortwave infrared sensor to penetrate smoke to help wildfire managers, guidance systems that allow it to re-aim its sensors more quickly and the ability to correct for atmospheric distortions.
The entire project, including ground systems, cost about $500 million, Jeff Tarr, DigitalGlobe's president and CEO told media.
