DARPA invites proposals for Arctic situation awareness

US: The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), US, invited innovative research proposals for technology supportive of Arctic situation awareness. The DARPA seeks advances in sensor systems and related technologies—such as station-keeping capabilities—that are rugged enough to withstand Arctic conditions, economical to operate and environmentally responsible with minimal impact.

Proposed research should investigate innovative approaches that enable revolutionary advances in science, devices, or systems. Specifically excluded is research that primarily results in evolutionary improvements to the existing state of practice, that requires development of new manned or space-based platforms, or that is only a concept of employment or operations using existing platforms and systems.

This solicitation is for an initial exploratory effort of no more than 9 months duration. Performers will develop system concepts and critical technologies and will participate in developing a rich base of technology options during a series of government-sponsored laboratory and field developmental trials.
