CSIRO releases bushfire prediction tool

Australia: All-too-prone to bushfires, Australia’s Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) has created a software tool, called Spark, to predict how fast a fire will spread. The 3D simulator uses geospatial data, such as vegetation types, topography; un-burnable elements, such as roads and water bodies; and weather data, such as air temperature, humidity, wind speed and wind direction, to do its predictive modelling. An open wildfire simulation framework lets researchers and agencies to incorporate the software into their existing systems and add new fire behaviour knowledge.
