The Corporation of the County of Simcoe (County of Simcoe) was presented with an Award of Excellence at ESRI Canada’s ninth annual Regional User Conference in Mississauga, earlier today. Alex Miller, President of ESRI Canada, the leading geographic information systems (GIS) provider in Canada, presented the Award in recognition of Simcoe County’s many GIS accomplishments including the Land Information Network Cooperative multi-participant project and the County’s interactive mapping website (www.DiscoverSimcoe.com). More than 400 GIS professionals were on hand for the presentation, which was one of the highlights of the conference.
In order to tap into the power of GIS, a number of organizations operating within the County of Simcoe formed an organization called LINC. The goal of LINC is for all partners to share in the growth and utilization of a common geographically referenced central database for all land related information in the County. The partnership was formed in 1993 and has since grown to include 28 organizations including the private sector and four different levels of government. A prime example of the LINC partnership is a recent application involving the Simcoe County District Health Unit utilizing GIS to track occurrences of the West Nile virus.
