USA, 5 June 2006: The Columbia Regional Geospatial Service Center will be open and fully operational by the middle of this month – in time for the start of hurricane season. The center is part of Stephen F. Austin State University and is located on the downtown square on Pecan Street. The center gathers information from the Texas Natural Resources Information Systems and other places and uses that information to make better, more detailed maps of locations around the state.
This year, the center will participate in a hurricane planning session in Louisiana. Officials will share data with agencies and other GIS centers in preparation for another emergency, according to Dr. Darrel McDonald, Assistant Director for the center.
